Reasonable prices. Friendly service. (although could be a little quicker on coffee refills) The food has wonderful flavor. Carrot suffle is to die for! Love the decor!!! Charming and different

Our waitress and the rest of the staff were very friendly. We started with fried pickles, which I can't personally comment on because I don't like pickles, but they look appetizing, and our granddaughters gobbled them up. The salads, and everything else were very fresh. My husband had a pork chop that he said was delicious.

This place is a winner. Different wonderful side dishes with each visit. True soul food. A bit slow but can't complain about that in the South. The fried pancake-like cornbread was a nice surprise. Go here before the chain restaurants down the road. Well worth it.

What is that smell? Why are all the light bulbs near our booth burned out? Why did you seat the only other family in the restaurant right next to us? So you glued records to the wall for atmosphere? OK, really now, what is that SMELL? It's like mold mixed with some kind of detergent!... Ok so these fired green tomatoes aren't bad and are plentiful. Could have gotten a better burger anywhere. (Wendy's for example) It's like a ghost town in here at 630pm on a Friday night. Have the owners ever eaten out before??? How much indifference can you inflict on the unfortunate folks who happen into your establishment? Never again.

Great soul food! Good sized portions especially for the price. Just be advised, they are only open until 9:00pm on Friday and Saturday, and not 10pm as stated here. Thank god we didn't lounge around. This was the best meal on our road trip.

It looks kind of shady from the outside but it's actually pretty cute inside. It's clean, smells fresh and has a unique decor. The fried chicken was cooked fresh, to order (you could tell because it took a while to come out and was piping hot). Negatives: service wasn't that great - we had to flag down our waitress when we were ready to order. The food also took a long time to come out. I hope you like Beyoncé, because that's the only music we heard (FYI, I do like Beyoncé, so we didn't mind it much but I think it would have been nice to hear other artists). It's always awkward when you have to pay at the cash register and your waitress asks you if you want to leave a tip and how much. The food was ok - I had the chicken and waffles, my husband had the 2 piece chicken dinner with cabbage and soup beans. My chicken tasted funny.. I couldn't put my finger on it but something was off. I gave this place 3 stars based on other soul food places I've been - not in Johnson City, but North Carolina and Georgia. Which, perhaps isn't fair. Maybe this is really good soul food for JC? We won't be back for a while.. It was pretty pricey for soul food.

My husband and I went to this restaurant based on the recommendation of a foodie friend of ours. It was a Sunday after church, so the place was fairly busy. Our meal took a very long time to arrive (about 45-50 minutes). We each ordered the fried tilapia sandwich with fries, and the breading was very tasty. The fish was served on two pieces of raw white bread. No Texas toast, bun, or hoagie roll which would have made it so much better! And the fries? I was disappointed to not be served some home fries or some type of homemade potatoes, but the fries were fast food frozen style with no flavor or seasoning except pepper. Very disappointed overall.

A very laid-back and unpretentious place to eat some good food. The food overall is pretty good and worth a repeat visit(s). The music was groovy and the decor fun and "old-school". Waitress takes good care of you while here and the food arrived just in time but not fast by any means. The SNP sauce was the huge hit for my girlfriend and I both and went well, very well with the fried Green tomatoes and the Shrimp Po' Boy of mine. We will be back and am glad we went. B+ rating for me.

Les "butter beans" sont super! Notre serveuse c'était attentive et amicale. Je crois qu'il est la place seulement pour le "soul food" en la Johnson City.

This place is Awesome! With so few quality restaurants in Johnson City this place needs more recognition. The food here is real food! Not pre packaged- and some is even local. When we had gone in the spring the Okra was from Asheville ( and it was Incredible). I am pretty sure it's BYOB, which if it is, def need to take advantage of that. Some more grilled options would be nice though. Every meal I have had here has been fantastic. If you are looking for some good local southern eats, def check this place out. It might not look like much from the outside, but don't let that hold you back. Go on inside, and you will be welcomed by people who have something invested in the place... Def not a chain resturant.

Ok food, horrendous service, poorly managed. Where to start? Well, when you first walk in there is a small reception area with seating and a sign that says to be seated. This sign was not in the eating area and you can't even see into the dining room in most of this entryway. So lots of people were sitting out there and no one came to check on us. When finally someone went to the door and hailed an employee they acted like we were all nuts to be sitting out there. Uh, how about moving the sign into the dining room if you want people to seat themselves there? Sheesh! And did they move the sign after that? Heck no. So that when we left there were people sitting out there again! Next we found a table and waited and waited. (This was not a busy Friday or weekend. It was mid-week around 6pm.) Finally had to ASK to be given menus. A waitress was walking right by us with menus and kept going! I mean how hard is it to stop and leave menus on a table? Had to ask twice for salad dressing. And on and on and more of the same. The food was ok but it took a very long time to get it. We had the fried chicken which was crunchy and moist but bland. The little johnny cakes/corn cakes are good. The ranch dressing is probably homemade since it was very runny, but tasty. The mac & cheese was thankfully not Velveeta, but was dry as if we got the last scrapings out of the pan. Soup beans were very thick but nothing to write home about. Later that night both of us had pains in our stomachs from this food. I wonder if they are frying in Crisco or some other horror. Anyway, we won't be in a hurry to try this place again. Why oh why doesn't the management get a clue about the service? Don't they know about online reviews and read them?

We had an online coupon that was only good on $50 worth of food (for 2 people?!? I don't think so) but at least it got us there. We were surprised there were several large family groups and several couples there on a Sunday afternoon. The service was a little slow and our waitress misheard my husband's choice but she remedied the problem promptly. I had a fried pork chop and he had chicken tenders then finally chicken livers. All the food was very good and we will go back. The macaroni and cheese was excellent - I'd say the best I've had in a restaurant ever. Unpretentious describes this place to a t. Some new tablecloths would be nice.

Amazing food! I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a decently priced meal. All of the ingredients seemed to be fresh and all of the food home cooked. This is one of the few locations in the tri cities where you can get a meal that is not all pre made and sent from a corporate location. Get on out here today for some food just like momma made!

This place brought me back home.... The South. Good ole' county cookin. I ordered the fried chicken dinner with two sides. I asked for all thighs for my meat, and that is exactly what I got. I also ordered extra side of dumplings which were fantastic. The sweet tea is as good as it gets, while the side of mac & cheese and green beans were to die for. The service was great. The only drawback of the place is that it looks to be run down from the outside while also having low light inside. But don't let looks deceive you, check this place out you won't be disappointed.

So let's just get to the nitty gritty. I lived in SoCal for 5 years. First in Oxnard and then in San Diego. That means I know what good food tastes like. This food almost made me tear up because it reminded me that there really are good restaurants in this world. Unfortunately the restaurants around here for the most part are horrible!! This is a true Diamond in the rough. Real Mashed Potatoes that really don't need gravy, the BEST Mac and cheese I have ever eaten at a restaurant, delicious sweet corn bread, and spectacular Fried Green Tomatoes. But the one dish that made me sit back and really enjoy my meal was the Red Beans and Rice. I had to purchase a large to go order of it and it took everything in me not to eat it when I got home. After I ate, I stayed full for some time and really felt satisfied. This is my new go to restaurant and I will always recommend Salt-n-Pepper to my friends and family. Thank you for the experience.

This is one of my favorite places! I go every few weeks or so. Food is always delicious, fresh, and made from scratch. My favorites are the soup beans, chicken & waffles, and honey bun cake!! I love that they have daily specials so I can try something new each time I come in! Decor is fun and random, atmosphere is laid back which I enjoy, and waitresses are friendly and fun!

I heard about this place several months ago and finally made it over to try it. It lived up to my expectations. The food is affordable, tasty, and generously portioned. Other reviews mentioned bad service but our waitress was very nice and attentive. I will definitely be returning for some carrot soufflé. I am so pleased that this restaurant exists in Johnson City as an alternative to the influx of chains in the city.

Great food! I had the chicken and waffles and it was great! The mac'n and cheese were good stuff too! The building is a bit sketchy and that's why I gave it 4 stars. I'll be going back!

Wonderful food. The best southern food around. Do not skip their Mac n cheese or the sweet tea. The staff are all sweet and smiling. I can not recommend this place enough.

I was beginning to think Johnson City didn't have a meat and three/soul food restaurant. So glad I found Salt n Pepper! My husband is on an extended business trip in JC and we were craving some Southern food. The soup beans are to die for! That was a new term for me. Basically beans cooked the way Southerners love them! Cornbread was interesting. More of a cornbread patty and sweet. I'm not usually a fan of sweet cornbread but this was very good. All the veggies are good! Can't wait to go back!

If you're looking for good southern food and are unfortunate enough to be in Johnson City, be sure to eat here! The chicken and waffles were amazing - you can add pecans or chocolate chips to the waffle and for the chicken you have a choice of three legs, a thigh and a leg, a breast and a wing, or chicken strips. The mac and cheese and fried okra were also fantastic. Great service, casual atmosphere, moderate prices.

Well, I was really cheering for this place, cause I like to see the little man succeed and the area always needs new restaurants. But........they need a lot of work. Atmosphere: plain dining room, dark and no artwork or anything. When I went the were playing the " Best of Whitney Houston" cd. Lots of people standing around but apparently, only 2 of those actually take orders. Took a while to be greeted and there were only about 4 other tables. I ordered the fried chicken (good), mac'n'cheese (okay) and cooked cabbage (very greasy !) My mom got the talipia po'boy which was big and came with a ton of frys but they were warm to me which was a turn off. No one ever came back to check on us and once my drink was empty it stayed empty. They need to really work on service and checking on people. This will probably be my first and last but most of their issues should be easy fixes but thats only if they realize the problems.

Plain Jane on the outside but fantastic food! Their fried chicken, greens, mac 'n cheese, etc are all delicious! The wait for your food is a bit long but everything is cooked fresh so it's well worth the wait! It's nice to have good home cooked meal in Johnson City!

Atmosphere: Its definitely located in an odd place, almost like it doesn't belong there. The restaurant is music inspired, has records tacked up all over the place. Unique almost country feel. Place was clean Service: Server was quick, friendly, came back multiple times to check up on me. Positive impression. Food: Friend Green Tomatoes were good, good batter but would have been better if they let the oil drip out for a bit. The ones on the bottom were greasy. Fried Shrimp Po'boy was okay, could have used more fried shrimp. I felt like it was eating just coleslaw pickles and bread at times. Collard greens were AMAZING, I wanted to lick the bowl clean. Mac and cheese was okay, I've had better. Cost: Good prices for the quality of food. Overall: Probably closer to a 3.5 but I would definitely go back

This place is deceivingly simplistic on the outside but filled with fun decor on the inside to give you a disco-soulful feel. It reminded me a bit of a soulfood restaurant I had been to in New Orleans years ago, which was a positive experience. I thought the staff was friendly and attentive. The food I had ordered was just ok. I ordered some fried green tomatoes (which were good, but a little on the greasy side), & a burger with fries and a side. Burger was decent & fries were good. My side dish was unfortunately super salty and I was a little disappointed. (I guess I should have expected something like that due to the name of the restaurant). I would give them a 3.5 out of 5 if I could go with half stars. I would still recommend them to others to try Worth a trip here to check them out!

I was so pleasantly surprised with this place. It is great soul food and also locally owned and operated. If you want some good country cooking, give this place a try.

There is nothing better than stumbling on a hidden gem when on a business trip and this one definitely fit the bill. As others have noted its location leaves a bit to be desired, but its well worth the trip. Stepping through the front door you are immediately hit by the smell of mouth watering down home cooking. The two-sided menu offered a variety of southern cooking, appetizers, burgers, chicken, fish, salads, soups and waffles. A friendly greeter guided me to a small corner booth where it was possible to people watch, and take in the funky decorations; vinyl 45's, LP's and album covers from the days when artists were more into lyrics and music than how they looked. I choose the two-piece chicken dinner, hand-dipped leg and thigh portions with mashed sweet potato and a bowl of cole slaw. The chicken was crispy on the outside, warm and meaty on the inside, with just the right amount of seasoning. The potatoes were steamy with a dash of brown sugar, and the slaw slightly tangy without being soggy. I washed it ll down with a tall glass of sweet Tea, the kind I will miss on returning to New England.I know its someone else's slogan, but it really was finger lickin good. Hoping that I get to sample more of their menu! There was dessert on thew menu though few people seemed to make it through the generous servings.
